What is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?
Most people know that we’re all required to have liability car insurance on our vehicles. In fact, it’s a crime to drive a vehicle on a South Carolina roadway that does not have liability insurance. But what happens when you’re involved in a car wreck where the at-fault driver doesn’t have car insurance despite being required by law to have their vehicle covered? Or what if you’re injured by a hit-and-run driver? This is where Uninsured Motorist Coverage comes into play!
The Purpose of Uninsured Motorist Coverage
Uninsured Motorist Coverage provides financial recompense to innocent persons who receive bodily injuries, or property damage, and to the dependents of those who are killed through the wrongful conduct of an uninsured or hit-and-run motorist.
Its purpose is not to provide coverage upon an uninsured vehicle to the public, but rather its object is to afford additional protection to an insured motorist. In other words, Uninsured Motorist Coverage will step in to pay for your damages if you are injured by an at-fault driver that doesn’t have car insurance or a hit-and-run driver as long as your have liability insurance on your car.
Uninsured Motorist Coverage is Mandatory in South Carolina
South Carolina Law also requires you to carry Uninsured Motorist Coverage equal to the minimum amounts of liability insurance which is $25,000/$50,000/$25,000. South Carolina was one of the first states in the country to mandate Uninsured Motorist Coverage on all vehicles when they enacted the South Carolina Financial Responsibility Act that required Uninsured Motorist Coverage be included in all automobile insurance policies issued in the State. Importantly, in South Carolina Uninsured Motorist Coverage is provided to you at no additional cost. However, Uninsured Motorist Coverage higher than the minimum limits may come with a higher premium and insurers may also charge a $200 deductible to use your Uninsured Motorist Coverage.
