Families Sue for Access to Historic Gullah Geechee Cemetery
At Bailey Law Firm, we are honored to represent the descendants of enslaved people from St. Helena Island in their fight to access the Big House Cemetery. This is not just a property issue. It is about protecting history, honoring cultural traditions, and defending rights guaranteed by law.
In 2024, landowners blocked the only road leading to this sacred burial ground. As a result, families were unable to visit, maintain, or bury loved ones on the site that holds generations of their ancestors. Some were even forced to hold burials more than 20 miles away.
This lawsuit demands what the law already provides: the right for families to access and care for the graves of their loved ones.
Preserving sites like the Big House Cemetery helps protect more than land. It safeguards culture, memory, and dignity.
