Bailey Law Firm Filed Federal Lawsuit on Behalf of Acquitted Teacher

At Bailey Law Firm, we believe in standing up for those who have been wrongfully accused and unjustly treated. That’s why we are representing Brenda Inabinette, a dedicated South Carolina educator whose career and reputation were put at risk due to an unfair legal process.

On Wednesday, February 12th, 2025, we filed a federal civil rights lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of South Carolina against Lexington School District One and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department on Ms. Inabinette’s behalf. This lawsuit seeks justice for the harm she endured after being falsely accused, arrested, and prosecuted.

The Case: A Teacher’s Reputation Unjustly Damaged

In August 2022, Ms. Inabinette, who has devoted over 30 years to teaching in South Carolina’s public schools, was charged with third-degree assault and battery after an incident involving a student. The accusation? That she grabbed a student’s ID lanyard and made a remark in frustration.

Without a full investigation, school administrators and law enforcement quickly took action. She was arrested, publicly humiliated, and placed on administrative leave. The result was devastating.

“She was thrown into the media, put in a jumpsuit, fingerprinted, and the reputation she worked decades to build crumbled overnight,” said Attorney Tyler Bailey.

Acquitted in Minutes – But the Damage Was Done

Despite the serious charges, when Ms. Inabinette finally got her day in court in August 2023, the jury needed only 20 minutes to find her not guilty. The evidence was clear, she had done nothing wrong.

But by then, the damage had already been done. Ms. Inabinette had been treated as guilty from day one, without due process, and it took a year-long fight to clear her name.

Even after her acquittal, the emotional toll remained. “At first, I didn’t want to go out or be seen,” she shared.

Fighting for Justice: Why We Filed This Lawsuit

At Bailey Law Firm, we believe no one should have their life upended due to false accusations and rushed decisions. This lawsuit alleges that the school district and sheriff’s department maliciously pursued an arrest warrant without proper justification, violating Ms. Inabinette’s civil rights.

Our lawsuit demands:

✅ A jury trial to hold those responsible accountable

✅ Actual and incidental damages for the harm done to Ms. Inabinette’s reputation and well-being

✅ Justice for an educator who dedicated her career to protecting and educating children

Ms. Inabinette is now back in the classroom at a different school within the district, continuing to do what she loves. But this fight is far from over.
